We wander for distraction, but we travel for fulfillment.  ~ Hilaire Belloc

When we realize our insignificance in this world,
it some how relieves the pressures from society to succeed -

Blue Highways - A Journey Into America
By William Least Heat-Moon

Publisher - Back Bay Books

Blue Highways is one of those classic travel books that begs to be read.  I know it was one of the many that got me started with my travel addiction.  After losing his wife and job on the same day, Heat-Moon decides to pack up a van and criss-cross his way around the back roads of our country.

The book is part Travel Journal, part Guide Book and is one of the early books that helped us with our decision to do what we're doing today.  I can remember reading this back in the early 90's and thinking "We have to do this before all these places he talks about are gone!"

It would be another decade before I could accomplish this task, but many times did I sit flipping through earmarked pages of this book to satisfy that travel bug I had been bitten by many years earlier.

I'm not sure if I even still have this worn and tattered book in a box somewhere, but heavens knows I could recite numerous pages from this travel blog before the computer era was invented.

There are times when the story can seem monotonous, but this is what traveling around the country is really like.  William Least heat-Moon tells is like it is and doesn't lie about the long days behind the wheel, or the backwoods mentality of many of the people he meets.  But this is what makes this country so beautiful, the fact that there is such a blend of different cultures, yet everyone seems to get along.

For anyone who is thinking of traveling, this should be in their library.
