Walk Across America
By Peter Jenkins

Publisher - Harper Paperbacks

I don't know how many books I've read that I think about daily, but I know this is one of them.  The first time I read this book, I finished it and that night started reading it again.  I had never done that before.

I knew we were building up for the trip we are on now, but when I finished Walk Across America, I had to sit down and rethink everything.  If this guy could spend a few years walking across America with just a back pack, then we could surely do it comfortably in a small RV.

The stories that Jenkins talks of are things that everyone longs to have and the beauty of it is, he finds them with no materialistic things.  Even though he's a confused guy that has just left college and a young girlfriend, he finds so much friendship out on the road that it just makes you want to pack up and start walking yourself.

You will cry while reading this book, there are stories that will stay with you for a long time afterwards, but it's a book that anyone who is interested in traveling could relate to.

"I started out searching for myself and my country," Peter Jenkins writes, "and found both."  And isn't that what we all are looking for?  Whether you do it in an RV like so many of us do, a Van like William Least Heat-Moon, a motorcycle like Che Guevara or walking like Peter Jenkins, we're all searching for something in ourselves.

Peter Jenkins has a whole series of books, he ended up walking across the entire country for many years.  He even took a boat Along the Edge of America and all of these books are good reads, but Walk Across America is the first of these books, and the best by far.  The Walk West was also a fine book!
