Driving the Apache Trail
The Apache Trail, or AZ 88 as it is officially known, links Apache Junction at the edge of the Greater Phoenix area with Globe via Theodore Roosevelt Lake, through the Superstition Mountains and the Tonto National Forest.
This 40 miles of steep, winding and mostly unpaved road leads you past magnificent scenery of twisted, rugged mountains with dense forests of saguaro and ferocactus, and several deep blue lakes.
Along the way you pass the Elvis Chapel along with the Wild West Ghost Town of Goldfield. There is the Mammoth Saloon and a few other attractions in Goldfield, but it's mostly just a tourist trap.
Canyon Lake is beautiful with its steep golden walls rising out of the blue waters of the Salt River. Then you drop down into Tortilla Flats.
There you'll find the Superstition Saloon with its saddles for stools at the bar, and the walls covered in one dollar bills.
After Tortilla Flats, the road narrows and turns to dirt and the views only get better.
There are a few more stops along the road at Fish Lake and Apache Lake before the Apache Trail ends at the Roosevelt Dam.
Our pictures dont compare to the magnificent views, so make sure to mark this on your "To Do" list of must see's.
